I'm still reading T.A. Shippey's J.R.R. Tolkien and I have thoroughly enjoyed his dissection of The Lord of the Rings. It's especially fun to see someone else take notice of your favorite lines or pieces of the story. One of my favorite poems is the 'Old Walking Song'... Shippey walks through the variations of this little song that appear in the story. He aptly displays how the variations are used to highlight the shifts in the story, among other things. Seriously, you will learn so much about the English language if you read this book.
The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet...
